Immigration and Integration: Statistics 2022

In 2022, year-on-year net migration of the permanent foreign resident population was 81,345 persons, an increase of 19,819 compared to the previous year. Total immigration increased by 14.8 per cent while emigration declined by 0.9 per cent. At the end of December 2022, 2,241,854 foreign nationals were living permanently in Switzerland.

In 2022, immigration into the permanent foreign resident population increased by 20,886 persons compared with the previous year. While 114,393 persons immigrated to Switzerland from the EU and EFTA (+19,523), the figure for third-country nationals was 48,042 persons (+1363).

For a total of about 52.3 percent of individuals immigrating to the permanent resident population, the reason for moving in was to take up employment (84,927 individuals, +26.8 percent compared to 2021). Family reunification accounted for 26.5 percent of immigration for long-term residence. In the context of family reunification, 43,026 persons immigrated to Switzerland (+7.4% compared to 2021), 16.5% of whom were family members of a Swiss national. Stays for education or training purposes accounted for 10.4 percent of immigration to the permanent resident population (16 827 persons, +4.0 %).

A total of 41,566 foreign nationals were naturalised. Of these, 8,987 came from Germany, 4,666 from Italy and 3,666 from France.
