Asylum applications
Over the course of the year, 27,740 people applied for asylum in Switzerland.

That is 8% less than in 2023 and significantly less than during the 2015/16 refugee crisis .
The 2015/16 refugee crisis refers to the movement of around two million people to Europe in 2015 and 2016. Switzerland was also severely affected at the time.
There were also high numbers of applications in the 1990s as a result of the Yugoslav Wars.
More than half of the asylum seekers in 2024 came from Afghanistan, Turkey or Algeria.
The remaining asylum applicants came from 128 other countries.
